The Reiki Life

While Reiki is most commonly know as a hands on healing practice, it’s also a way of life. In truth, it’s a practice to rediscover your truest innate self—the spiritual energy that YOU ARE! Reiki is a journey into your inner light! Often times this light is hidden, or covered up by the hurt we’ve encountered and the false beliefs we have established about ourselves and we carry throughout our life. This can keep us from experiencing the joy and peace that is our innate nature.

When you take a Reiki class, you attune to your spiritual energy and begin to work on peeling back the layers by practicing Reiki on yourself. Reiki is a beautiful spiritual practice but it’s not a magic wand (although it feels so magic) and doesn’t happen on it’s own or overnight—it does takes spiritual work and fortitude. When you dedicate yourself to a Reiki practice, every aspect of your life has the potential for change and transformation. You become reconnected to this Universal Life Force Energy, your intuition, and the Divine in your life. Your mind opens, your heart heals and you will be closer to finding your true purpose and calling in life.

The main focus of the system of Reiki is about embracing life through the Reiki Principles in all that we do. When we embrace these principles, we embrace a way of BEING that can help us feel more grounded, connected and focused on ourselves, our healing, and holding the space of healing for others.

The 5 Reiki Principles

Reiki principles are there to encourage us to embody the Reiki energy throughout the our everyday life. They speak to the importance of living in the present moment, one day at a time.” Mikao Usui, who created the spiritual practice, believed Reiki principles are the key to living a happy life and serve as “medicine to the soul,” By reciting the principles daily when you wake up, in meditation, and practicing their meaning, you align with higher frequencies, become more centered and grounded, and live with more meaning.

The original principles were translated as:

  1. Just for today, I will not worry.

  2. Just for today, I will not anger.

  3. Just for today I will be grateful.

  4. Just for today I will do my work honestly.

  5. Just for today I will show lovingkindness to all beings everywhere.

Below are the Reiki Principles used to guide us through life moment by moment. I have slightly modified the wording(in parenthesis) as I feel it lends to a more positive ‘I AM’ affirmation but the concepts remain the same:

Just for today—Why do we say this? This refers to staying in the present moment each and every day. When we adopt this mindset, we can hold space for change in every single moment. Staying in the moment allows you to fully process life as it’s happening. Afterall, the present moment is all we ever truly have.

Just for today, I will not worry. (I am peaceful)— The first principle does not mean you will will not ever be worry, helps you to live each day without worrying about the past or the future. It reminds us not to be fixated on things that haven’t happened yet and to accept we do not have control over what will happen, rather how we approach it when it does.

Just for today I will not anger. (I am calm) The goal of this principle is not to suppress emotions. but understand and use them as a tool for learning how your emotions affect you. This principle enables you to be mindful, acknowledge and explore the anger, appreciate what has been shown and ultimately allow the emotion to move through without getting stuck in it. When we are mindful we can recognize our triggers and learn how to best work through them each day in the moment.

Just for today I will be grateful (I am grateful)This is one of fundamental principles of Reiki teaching. It encourages us to focus on our blessing in life, reminding us that no matter what is happening in our lives, there is always something to be grateful for. Daily gratitude enhances your wellbeing and supports you to lead a more positive focused life.

Just for today I will do my work honestly (I am living with intention and integrity ) This principle reminds us that each step is a part of our journey, and aligns us with our purpose. Our work is in our everyday lives as how we show up, and the energy we bring into everything we do in life.

Just for today I will be kind to every living being everywhere. (I am kind to every living being everywhere)This principle is as simple as it sounds. It’s about being kind to ourselves and others. Extending lovingkindness to every being keeps us in the vibration of love.

This practice for me has brought deep transformation. I have learned we are not bound to the emotions we experience but rather can shift our lens and realign our mindset through simple but profound daily practices.
